Carrefour Enhances Blockchain Technology Adoption to Make Food Sources Transparent

France's Carrefour supermarket group said last week that it will enhance its blockchain applications in 2018 by using blockchain technology for testing food safety traceability.

Currently, Carrefour has used blockchain technology to track the production of chickens in the Auvergne Mountains region of central France, detecting all the data generated for each chicken from chicks to adults and from farm to table. Consumers can scan the QR codes on food packages to access information on each stage.

Carrefour says the technology will also be used for more food safety traceability by the end of 2018, including on eight food items such as eggs, cheese, tomatoes, burgers and salmon, meaning that information from suppliers on product dates, origins and distribution channels will be made transparent and food safety issues will be improved.
