Hackers take aim at bitcoin as value soars

As bitcoin trading climbs, the digital currency has become a new target for hackers. A Slovenian bitcoin "mining" company was recently hacked and lost close to $80 million (about 529 million yuan) when 4,700 bitcoins were stolen.

The company, called NiceHash, said the hackers launched the attack in the early hours of the 6th and began stealing bitcoins two hours later. The company's chief executive, Marco? Kobal made a live appearance on the social network Facebook, saying that he had not "abandoned" his clients. He claimed that hackers had penetrated the computer of one of the company's employees and that the relevant authorities had stepped in to investigate, but did not specify the specific investigating agency.

In recent trading, bitcoin has skyrocketed in value, even exceeding $17,000 (RMB 112,000) at one point on the 7th. As the market heats up on bitcoin, experts worry that not only could bitcoin holders be targeted by hackers, but the value of the currency could also be grossly overvalued.
