improvements

On April 12, SparkLinux released an ISO image of version 4.8 RC, codenamed "Tyche". The 4 major releases of Sparky are all based on Debian Stretch. Compared to version 4.7, this release introduces the following changes.

A full system update from the Debian stable repository dated 11 April.

Linux kernel 4.9.82.

Calamares (installer) 3.1.12 and the accompanying option to install the system on an encrypted disk.

Allowing the selection of localization at live mode startup (translations, etc.; via kernel parameters) as well as keyboard layout (the default layout is suitable for general Chinese users, so no special attention is needed; via a new script).

Introduction of new packages: bleachbit (for cleaning up the system) and xinit (providing the startx command).

Temporarily replaced gscreenshot with sparky-screenshot.

Other changes and details may be found in their publication notices.

SparkyLinux is targeted at being a fast, lightweight and fully customizable operating system. It provides an out-of-the-box user experience with a series of slightly modified lightweight desktop environments/window managers. The alternatives are LXDE, Enlightenment, JWM, KDE, LXQt, Openbox, MATE and Xfce.

SparkyLinux contains a number of sub-versions suitable for different users. At the top of the branch tree, it is divided into two version sets, "stable" and "rolling", built on Debian Stable and Debian Testing respectively, and another development version for testing. The "stable" version is more suitable for new Linux users (although, in general, Sparky is not aimed at Linux beginners, but at users with some Linux knowledge).

The first two editions contain several subeditions: Home Editions have all tools, decoders, plugins and drivers installed by default; Base/Minimal Editions contain the minimum set of tools. Minimal Editions allows users to install a base system with their choice of desktops and minimal applications via the Sparky Advanced Installer, which includes Sparky MinimalGUI (Openbox, no codecs) and MinimalCLI (text mode, no codecs and X).

In addition, there are Special Editions in the "rolling" set, which include GameOver versions with many FOSS games and related tools, Rescue and Multimedia versions with live disc and system recovery and rescue tools.
