United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification secretariat led a delegation to visit for cooperation and exchange on big data on earth

On September 17, 2018, Dr. Pradeep Monga, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and his delegation visited the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IRSDGE) to have an in-depth exchange on the scientific services of big earth data in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the zero-growth assessment of land degradation, and reached a preliminary intention to cooperate with the sub-topic "Selection and Demonstration of Sustainable Development Indicators in the Belt and Road" of the Digital Belt and Road Project of the A-class Strategic Pioneer Science and Technology Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (also known as the "Guangmu" Project).

Researcher Li Xiaosong and Associate Researcher Sun Zhongchang from the Digital Earth Key Laboratory introduced the framework of the "Guangmu" project, the objectives, plans and research progress of the work of Big Earth Data in serving the realization of SDGs, and proposed ideas for cooperation on how to effectively coordinate and promote the service of Big Earth Data for global SDGs monitoring through UNCCD. Dr. Pradeep Monga, Dr. Jia Xiaoxia, UNCCD Science and Technology Policy Committee, presented the positioning of UNCCD, its scientific and technological needs, and its latest action plan.

The two sides then focused on how to take full advantage of big data to serve the SDG 15.3 (combating desertification, restoring degraded land and soil) subgoal monitoring. Dr. Pradeep Monga highly appreciated the potential of big earth data to serve zero-growth land degradation globally and in key regions, and proposed the idea of using big earth data to improve the baseline of land degradation and technical system for overall dynamic assessment, and hoped that together with the "Guangmu" project, the work on land degradation assessment in Northeast Asia would be carried out in collaboration, providing good technical support and application demonstration of big earth data for Northeast Asian developing countries.
